Different video themes lead to different subtitle language styles. What are the characteristics of subtitle translation?
1. Semantic fidelity and accuracy
Subtitle translation products should be free of low-level errors such as typos. Subtitles are directed to the general audience. If there are many wrong words, the impression score of the audience will be reduced. If there is a semantic error in translation, the best acting skills can't be saved. The audience can only use their imagination to understand.
In addition, due to various constraints, sometimes when encountering long or characteristic cultural subtitles, the translation can not be 100% faithful to the original text, but at least the semantic meaning should not deviate from the original text.
2. Concise language
This is one of the most important principles in subtitle translation. Subtitle translation is mainly limited by form. Formal restrictions mainly refer to time and space restrictions. Time limit means that the subtitle translation must be synchronized with the dialogue, action and picture of the characters, and the time required by the audience to browse the subtitles is also different. Therefore, the subtitle line should not be too long. Otherwise, before the audience has finished reading a line of text, the subtitles will turn over, which is really embarrassing. The number of words should be adjusted according to the subtitle time. Space limitation means that the location and number of words of subtitle translation are limited by the screen size. Sometimes there will be additional information outside the dialogue, such as the explanation of time, place and other information, which will be placed above the dialogue subtitles or vertically on the left or right side of the screen. Due to the limited browsing time, the number of words per line should not be too much.
Easy to understand and fluent
Subtitle translation should be easy to understand, smooth and fluent, so that the audience can understand the meaning of the words in one or two seconds. The text of the subtitle is fleeting. If the translation is awkward and obscure, and makes the audience think for a few seconds, they will miss the next subtitle information.
4. Context dependent
The translator should have a deeper understanding of the subtitle content with the help of the actual context, put himself in the role and environment of the speaker, and deeply understand the meaning of the discourse. In the process of translation, we should carefully consider the translation according to the context, reasonably delete it, and strive to be accurate and concise.
